How to Make Bee Cupcakes

Bee Cupcakes are a fun and easy way to make bee-themed desserts for your next party. They are perfect for kids! In this blog post, you will learn how to make bee cupcakes from top to bottom including the bee body, bee wings, bee antennae, and more!

How to Make Bee Cupcakes

These are fantastic cupcakes for your favorite gardener or even for that baby shower that struggles for a theme. Bees are something that everyone should know more about and be willing to try and help – they really are our friends!

Why are bees so important to us?

Bees are the beekeepers of the world; they pollinate plants and crops so that we can continue to grow food. There are no “Humans” without “Bees!”

What exactly do bees do?

Bees fly from flower to flower collecting nectar and pollen. When they visit plants, they transfer the bee’s own pollen onto other flowers so that when a bee visits another plant of the same species, it can fertilize their blossom! This ensures healthy growth for these plants.

Why are bees dying?

Pollinators like bees are dying because of gardener’s use of pesticides and fertilizers. Bees work so hard to pollinate our plants, but when peoples apply these chemicals that harm the bees, it can cause bee colonies to dwindle or even die out completely!

A great video on how to help bees

What is happening?

Bee populations have been declining at alarming rates in recent years with beekeepers reporting bee colony losses of more than one-third. Scientists are still examining the causes and impacts, but it is thought that a mix of pesticides, fungicides, herbicides, and lack of plant diversity may be contributing to this problem.

Do honey bees hurt us?

Honey bees are not aggressive and they do not sting people. They only attack humans if their bee colony is threatened, such as when someone takes away their honey or kills the bee’s nest.

How can we help?

The best way to save these important pollinators is by planting a bee-friendly garden with lots of different flowers. You can also buy bee-friendly plants from nurseries.

How to Make Bee Cupcakes

The yellow cupcake base can be made from either a boxed mix or the following recipe:

Bee cupcakes recipe

A good yellow cupcake recipe for the base:

  • 1 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1 1/4 tsp baking powder
  • 1/8 tsp salt
  • 2 large eggs at room temp
  • 3/4 cup sugar
  • 1/4 cup unsalted butter, cut into 1/2” cubes
  • 1/2 cup milk – the higher the fat content the better
  • 2 tsp vanilla extract
  • 1 1/2 tsp vegetable oil
  • Preheat the oven to 350°F and place the shelf in the middle of the oven. Line the muffin tin with cupcake liners.

How to make Bee cupcakes

In a large bowl whisk flour, baking powder, and salt together. Set aside.

Place butter and milk in a microwave-safe dish and zap 2 minutes on high to melt the butter.

In a separate bowl, beat eggs for 30 seconds on medium-high speed.

With the beater still going, pour the sugar in over 30 seconds.

Beat eggs for 6 minutes more on a highly faster speed, or until tripled in volume and almost pure white.

When the egg is whipped, scatter 1/3 flour across the surface, then beat on low for 5 seconds. Stop beating, add half the remaining flour, then mix again on low for 5 seconds. Add remaining flour, then mix on Speed 1 for 5 – 10 sec until the flour is just mixed in. Once you can’t see flour, stop straight away.

Pour the hot milk/butter, vanilla, and oil into the now empty flour bowl. Add about 3/4 cups of the Egg Batter into the hot milk. Use a whisk to mix until smooth. It should look kind of foamy.

With the beater on low still, pour the milk mixture into the Egg Batter over 10-15 seconds, then turn the beater off.

Fill your muffin tins with batter until they are 2/3 full. Bake 20-22 minutes until a toothpick comes out clean.

How do you store Bee Cupcakes?

Here is the thing – with the more futzy designs, I like to make them in advance of an event or get-together. The best way to usually store your finished creations? Room Temperature.

Granted, they aren’t going to be around that long – my family of three could easily take them out in two to three days. Since you are using canned frosting instead of buttercream frosting or fondant, they should be fine for five to six days. You can learn more about that in our article How To Frost A Cupcake.

You can also make the cupcake bases in advance, the wings and antennae in advance, and even the yellow tinted frosting ahead of time. It takes very little time to assemble them all.

Bee Cupcake Candy Toppers

These are used to make the wings and antennae for your bee cupcakes.

First, you have to take 4 oz of melting chocolate and actually melt it. You can do this by placing it in the microwave for 14 seconds on high, stirring, then microwaving again. Stir until smooth and liquidy. If it starts to look grainy it means you overcooked it. Try adding a little Crisco or vegetable oil to smooth it back out.

Add that melted chocolate to your piping bag.

Take your bee template and put it under a piece of waxed paper or even parchment paper – so you can see the design thru it. Pipe ]chocolate wings on a piece of wax paper.

Also, pipe sets of the antenna onto wax paper. Let both things cool until set

Bee Cupcake Decorations

While those candy toppers are the basics of your decoration – you will want to keep that melted chocolate pastry bag handy for your bee strips. You can also add yellow glitter to your frosted bee cupcake work of art, before you add the chocolate items, to make your bee sparkly.

How to make cupcakes in a terracotta pot?

Now I know a lot of people bake their cupcakes in real, mini flower pots. I have even seen people in the Dollar Tree crafting groups talk about putting an oreo in the bottom to plug the hole, then pouring their batter over it, and baking them in the oven.

Um – I love my Dollar Tree stores, but just NO on baking food inside things made in China.

I’m always interested in which household items are safe to use for my family. I found out that some flowerpots may contain lead, a dangerous heavy metal. Lead is not made from a food-safe material and can be harmful if ingested by children or pets; it’s important to know so you won’t take any chances with your loved ones!

What does lead poisoning do to you?

Lead poisoning can lead to a variety of side effects. These may include behavioral disorders, seizures, and intellectual disabilities in children; infertility for adults; and kidney damage or high blood pressure among other things.

A great video on why Lead is bad for all of us – and we should avoid trying to eat it.

I don’t know about you but if I had my kids over at someone’s house who was making their cupcakes out of flower pots filled with lead, I would not be the best company…

Unless you have certified food-grade terracotta flowerpots, please use MY method.

What to use for flower pots

I like these Royal Brown Tulip Style Baking Cups that I found on Amazon. They come in a pack of 200 and are also great for making muffins!

These tulip baking cups are made from premium quality grease-proof paper. This material helps to retain moisture and promotes even baking. This product is oven safe and can withstand temperatures up to 425 degrees Fahrenheit.

The only difference between the small, medium, or large is the height of the cup paper. The bases are all the same and fit in any muffin tin.

Flower Pot Cupcake Variations

Here is the secret to huge options on variations for this chocolate cupcake recipe. If you want chocolate orange cupcakes, use orange extract instead of vanilla. Mint extract would make for a great chocolate mint cupcake!

Just think of all the different flavored extracts that you can use! Butter flavored extract would make for a fantastically rich flavored gourmet treat. How about almond extract for a perfect match to some cherry frosting? Now you have Black Forrest cupcakes! Banana extract would lend itself to a treat any little monkey would be tickled to have.

Plant Steaks

Instead of seed packets, you could use plant stakes and write the names of your guests on them. That way, they make for perfect place setting name tags. I like these KINGLAKE 100 Pcs 6 x10cm Plastic Plant T-Type Tags on Amazon. They come in a variety of colors, but I prefer white.

Silk Flowers

Your local Dollar Tree has a constant influx of silk flowers and most bunches come with 4-7 individual stems. Simply take your wire cutters and trim them to just the right size to peep out of your pots.

Use Regular Seed Packets

You can often find fun flower packets at the local Dollar Tree for just $0.25 – that means four packs for a buck! Use those on your wooden picks and everyone has a souvenir after they have eaten their yummy treat!

Rainbow Cupcakes: The perfect treat for Valentine’s Day, St. Patrick’s Day, Easter, and Pride Month!

Why do I mention Pride Month?

Here is the story…in 2019, my kiddo was in 6th grade and her best friend tried to kill themself. At 12-years-old they were a female-to-male transgender, and he was having a really hard time with everything.

That is when my daughter decided that there should be a GSA at their school, so it would provide support for people like him as well as educate others about what it means to be LGBTQ+ and things like that.

She went through a LOT of work, hoops, meetings, and more to make that club happen so there would be a safe space. I was SO proud of all her hard work and it helped her earn her Girls Scout Silver Award. You can read more about that all here on Sarah Lyn Gay’s Site but these are the very cupcakes I made to help them celebrate that first meeting – where over FORTY kids showed up.

I am SO proud of her for creating something to help others in a world full of hate and violence.

What makes us see the colors of the rainbow?

The light that shines on the water droplets.

And when we see those colors, we feel happy and loved because it means the world is a beautiful place where everyone can exist in peace!

We have to show this rainbow love every day by being kinder to others and remembering what’s really important: kindness over cruelty, acceptance over exclusion, equality over superiority.

This world doesn’t need more of anything…except LOVE!

The Rainbow and the Bible.

From Genesis to the Book of Revelations, the bible is mentioned several times in the bible. Basically, in this sinful world, God promises to protect you from the evil one. Even when sufferings happen remember God promises to help you and you will overcome. Whenever you see a rainbow think about God’s awesomeness, remember He’s always near, and trust and have faith in the Lord…

Pretty cool, huh? From preschool on up, we are led to believe that – from the promise to Noah after the flood waters had receded – that the rainbow is such a great promise of God’s love.

I don’t know about you, but it always brings a smile to MY face.

White Cupcake Batter Ingredients:

The Best Rainbow Cupcakes

These can be made with or without coloring the cupcake bases themselves. I think they add a ton of color to the finish product for that “wow” factor – but you can easily just use a white or yellow cupcake base and use our decoration inspiration for the tops.

How to Make Conversation Heart Cupcakes

If you’re looking for Valentine’s Day dessert ideas, these conversation heart cupcakes are the perfect treat. They come with a recipe and instructions to make them at home!

How to Make Conversation Heart Cupcakes

I am so excited to share today’s recipe with you! These conversation heart cupcakes are super easy to make and they look absolutely adorable. I love the idea of baking these, giving them away as a gift, or having some for myself too!

There is something about baked goods that just makes me feel warm inside. I hope you enjoy this recipe and let me know what you think in the comments below.

Conversation Heart Candy History

The history of conversation heart candy is fascinating. It was created in 1848 by a candy maker named Oliver R. Chase and it is still made the same way today with natural ingredients like sugar, corn syrup, food coloring; citric acid (to make them sour), and ammonium chloride which gives them their shape through a process called conching where they are mixed for hours at high temperature to break down the molecules of cocoa butter into smaller pieces so that they melt more easily on your tongue.

A lot of words to explain that he basically created the first machine to whip these candy lozenges out faster and in a fun shape.

Yup – they were originally sore throat lozenges – that were designed to help ailing patients. That candy maker was originally a pharmacist!

Food historians say that the conversation heart shape was chosen because it resembles a human mouth with teeth. They are also said to represent kisses and were first called “sweethearts.”

The German word for these candies is Herzensbonbons, which translates as “Heart’s Delight” or “Sugar of my Heart,” and they have been known in Japan since 1907 as Kokin-no-tama or Sweetheart Ball.

In 1912, President Taft became the first American president to receive this type of candy when he received them from his wife who had traveled abroad. The popularity spread quickly around America until World War II where sugar shortages made their production difficult, but after WWII they never stopped being made.

They used to be larger and had longer sayings on them. As with all things over time, the price goes up and the size goes down. The latest development? The candy endearments now speak with common text phrases.

Conversation Heart Shortage

In 2018 Necco declared bankruptcy. The original plant closed and their candy brands were sold off. The rights to Sweethearts were acquired by the Spangler Candy Company. With the purchase of the brand by Spangler, Sweethearts were unavailable for Valentine’s Day 2019 as Spangler set up production of the confections in a new plant.

Sweethearts returned in 2020 with the original flavors from before Necco’s 2010 change to more vivid colors and sour flavors, but due to equipment problems, the familiar sayings were largely either incomplete or missing entirely.

They seem to have all the bugs worked out though and are headed in the correct direction.

Whew!

Heart Shaped Cupcakes Are a Lie!

Yes – I have heard of the old trick about placing a marble or small ball of tinfoil between the cupcake liner and the muffin tin wall before adding batter and then baking them.

Contrary to the often shared knowledge – you do NOT get a heart shaped cupcake from this. You get a cupcake that looks like it is a scratch-n-dent special.

I blame Tupperware ladies for this rumor – they shared the tip at parties for 30 years.

The Garden Gnome; A Culture All It’s Own

The Garden Gnome is not just another yard figurine. It has its own distinguished history, culture, and controversy attached to it. Before you buy a Garden Gnome for your home be sure to know all of the factors that go along with it.

For starters, the history of the Garden Gnome dates back to Germany in the 1800s. The original statues were made out of clay and were handcrafted. They then made their way to England in the mid-1800s. Around the late 1800s to the 1900s they made their way into America.

During WWII production of these figurines came to an abrupt halt. The German factories were commandeered and converted to support the war efforts. In the 1960s the gnomes picked up popularity again however, they were mass-produced using plastic. Because so many of them were produced they gained the stigma for being a tacky lawn ornament.

The clay hand-carved Garden Gnomes have been family heirlooms for many families. The Clay figurines are making a come back of sorts, more companies are reviving the old tradition.

Any Garden Gnome enthusiast will tell you that Garden Gnomes are wonderful creatures that are very good luck

how to make gnome cupcakes

to have in your garden. They are primarily vegetarians, joyful little people who enjoy having fun and helping out with things. It is believed that having one in your garden will be helpful in the day-to-day activities that are necessary for proper garden management. It is believed that they have an excellent ability to be able to reflect on history and an even better perspective on the future.

Not all people have such a jovial perception of the Garden Gnome. There are some that disagree with the use of these little guys. They believe that to have a Garden Gnome in the home is slavery and that the Garden Gnome should be freed.

There are groups that will take a Garden Gnome from a yard if they see it. Relocating it to the forest where they believe they find their freedom. A few of the groups choose to operate under the radar, sneaking into people’s yards and stealing these figurines. There is a political group that actively lobbies for the ban of Garden Gnome slavery.

Whether you are a follower of the Garden Gnome culture or just someone who thinks they are cute enough to go in your yard these figurines have a lot of history behind them and can be a wonderful addition to your yard. Just be sure to keep them away from the gnome liberators if you would like to keep them for a long period of time.

Strawberry season is just around the corner and if you want to celebrate the season with a dessert, try Strawberry Shortcake Cupcakes. They are easy and so delicious!

I also added some whipped topping on top for an extra dollop of sweetness. These little beauties will satisfy your cravings even after berry season has ended!

These Strawberry Shortcake Cupcakes are easy, delicious, beautiful – what more could you want?

History of strawberry shortcake :

The strawberry shortcake is a dessert that originated in the 18th century. It was traditionally made with biscuit dough, eggs, and sugar whipped up into a batter then dipped into butter to make it flaky. This would be baked until golden brown on top and soft inside (like a sponge cake).

The strawberries were cut into thin slices or whole berries that are mixed in for taste then served warm either by themselves or topped off with fresh cream or vanilla ice cream on top!

Nowadays, you can find variations of this recipe using all sorts of toppings like chocolate chips, crushed pretzels, and graham crackers as well as other types of biscuits such as vanilla scones. Strawberry Shortcakes now have nearly replaced old favorites like chocolate cakes and red velvet cupcakes!

The Strawberry Shortcake Cupcakes are easy to make. Just follow the recipe below for a delicious dessert that is perfect for any occasion or just an afternoon snack.

Strawberry Shortcake Cupcakes

How to make strawberries last longer

With this being a fleeting season for them, you want to make sure you get the most out of your strawberries.

It is important that they are washed, dried, and stored with care in order to keep them from spoiling too quickly.

The best way to store fresh berries for long-term use is by washing them thoroughly then drying them off completely before placing them into an airtight container lined with paper towels or a cloth towel such as cheesecloth.

This will help absorb moisture which can lead to mold growth when left wet on its own. It also keeps the fruit from sticking together so it won’t go bad more quickly because there’s less surface area exposed where air and bacteria can penetrate through!

Freezing Strawberries

This technique works great if you plan on using them within a few days for an easy dessert or to top off your favorite smoothie bowl. Wash, dry, and hull the berries before placing them on a cookie sheet lined with parchment paper in single layers without touching each other.

Put them into the freezer but make sure you don’t cram too many strawberries onto one tray because this will lower how quickly they freeze and can lead to unpleasantly mushy fruit once thawed out!

In order to use frozen strawberries: as soon as they are taken from the freezer, let them sit at room temperature so that it softens up a bit since being cold can cause any heat-sensitive food like these iced treats to become soggy or icy when placed directly into hot liquids. Then simply slice if desired and add to your favorite smoothie bowl, or top off on a dessert or ice cream sundae.

Homemade Strawberry Shortcake Cupcakes

Just like any of our cupcake recipes, you can make the cupcake bases in advance. I actually have some chocolate cupcakes in my freezer right now for Valentine’s Day. Generally, the rule of thumb is that if you plan to frost and enjoy them within a couple of days you should be storing your cupcakes at room temperature.

If you do not plan to frost or enjoy them within a couple of days then it’s best to freeze them. You can learn more about Batch Baking During the Winter Months in my other post if you want to, but batch baking and freezing are some of my trade secrets. Rarely would I pop them in the fridge – the constantly circulating air dries them out too much.

How do you store Strawberry Shortcake Cupcakes?

Here is the thing – with the more futzy designs, I like to make them in advance of an event or get-together. The best way to usually store your finished creations? Room Temperature.

Granted, with a whipped cream topping, they aren’t going to be safe that long at room temperature. This is the ONE exception I make to sticking them in the fridge – normally I say “no” to the fridge, but this is a rare exception. You can learn more about that in our article How To Frost A Cupcake.

Quick and Easy Strawberry Shortcake Cupcakes

Yes, I am using a boxed cake mix to whip up the bases for these today – but the details are really in the assembly of the actual cupcake. If you DO want to make them from scratch – use our yellow cupcake recipe first: Best Yellow Cupcake Recipe from Scratch

28 of the Best Boozy Margarita Cupcakes and More!

Boozy Margarita Cupcakes and more? The booze-infused cupcakes are a great creation albeit they are only for adults due to the content. The liquored desserts are extremely popular these days and we have crafted an amazing collection of boozy cupcakes for you along with the most frequently asked Boozy Cupcakes questions.

28 of the Best Boozy Margarita Cupcakes and More! article collage cover image

28 Boozy Cupcakes to Spice Up Your Celebration

While I have an incredible collection of boozy margarita cupcakes and more for you, it can be confusing for people. Some call them boozy cupcakes while the terms “cocktail cupcakes” and “drunken cupcakes” seem to be the occasional substitution. Whichever term you use, these are alcohol-infused cupcakes that we are talking about, not boozy cupcakes with pipettes.

When talking about cupcakes with pipettes, it is a plain ol’ alcohol-free cupcake that has all the booze in the pipette. Just before ripping into that cupcake, squeeze the contents of the pipette into the cupcake.

Do boozy cupcakes get you drunk?

They could. There are several factors here to consider. First of all, after baking cupcakes with booze in them for 30 minutes, roughly 30-40% of the booze content has NOT baked out. If you overindulge, you could get tipsy! People like me, who have had gastric bypass surgery, gets tipsy after just one or two sips of wine. 1-2 cupcakes could make us legally drunk! So, for all of those people who want to know “Does alcohol bake out of cupcakes?” the answer is both yes, and no. MOST of it will bake out.

One other thing to consider: what proof is your alcohol? The higher the alcohol content of your choice of mix-in could result in a higher-proof finished product.

Can you replace water with alcohol in cake mix?

Yes. Do not replace ALL of the water with the booze – I suggest only using 1/2 a cup of booze for a boxed cake mix. It the cake mix calls for 1.5 cups of water, use 1 cup of water and half a cup of the booze. Since over half of the alcohol/booze bakes out, you will have a drier cupcake if you substitute much more than that.

How do you add alcohol to cupcake mix?

I’m going to go right to Betty Crocker for the answer on this one – I LOVE the tip about substituting booze for the extract in a recipe! Extracts have a lot of alcohol in them normally so it would be a fair swap out. Just think of Amaretto in chocolate cake or Malibu in peach cupcakes!

When adding liquor to your baking, start with a little and work up to your taste level. Allow enough cooling time to remove the alcohol’s harsh taste. You can substitute alcohol for extracts called for in recipes if you desire. In fact, this could open up a whole new world of flavors to try!

Can cupcakes be made the night before?

Yes. We have talked about this before.

Can I sell alcohol infused cupcakes?

This is challenging as many people are selling baked goods, that they make from home, thanks to the cottage laws. Are you planning on buying the alcohol in bulk? You may need a special license or permit to be able to buy wholesale.

Are you using it as an INGREDIENT? You should be OK. That is if your booze is mixed into the batter and then baked. If you are planning on going the pipette route? You are considered to be selling alcohol and need the liquor license from your state.

The Foodpreneur Institute has this to say:

All you lovely bakers who want to stick a miniature bottle of liqueur or other alcoholic beverage in the top of a cupcake or other food product, beware! Follow your state law. Not sure about the size of the miniatures? They are the 50 ml bottles often used as gifts, samples, or for promotional purposes. But this requirement is for all alcoholic beverages.

Are you planning to sell on Facebook Marketplace? It is a hard “no” on the Facebook Terms of Service. Sweet Fest did the research for us.

According to CNN, a spokeswoman from Facebook explained that “the new policy will prohibit all private sales, trades, transfers and gifting of alcohol and tobacco products on Facebook and Instagram…Any brands that post content related to the sale or transfer of these products will have to restrict that content to adults 18 or older.”

So, if you DO plan to make boozy margarita cupcakes and more for a profit, make sure you are checking with all of your local regulations to prevent the added expense of unwanted fines or fees.
