Move over Easter bunny, it’s time to get ready for lamb cupcakes! These little guys are sure to sweeten up your day with their fluffy marshmallow fleece and delicious chocolate flavor. But before we get started on the recipe, let’s take a look at the history of lambs in our culture.
Lamb History
Lambs have been a part of our culture for centuries, with references to them dating back to the ancient Egyptians. They are often seen as symbols of innocence and purity, making them popular choices for Easter celebrations. In fact, lamb is the traditional dish served on Easter Sunday in many countries.
Lambs in Nursery Rhymes
Lambs also often appear in nursery rhymes, such as “Mary Had a Little Lamb” and “Baa Baa Black Sheep”. These songs are often used to teach children about counting and the alphabet.
Lambs in the Bible
Lambs are also mentioned in the Bible, where they are used as symbols of sacrifice, hope, and prosperity depending on which verse you find. In particular, lamb is often associated with the Passover feast, which celebrates the Israelites’ escape from slavery in Egypt.
I actually found 41 different bible verses that have lambs in them. My favorite is from Isaiah 11:6:
And the wolf will dwell with the lamb, And the leopard will lie down with the young goat, And the calf and the young lion and the fatling together; And a little boy will lead them.
Lamb Popularity
So why are lambs so popular in our culture? There are likely many reasons, but one of the most likely is that they represent innocence and purity. They’re also cute and fluffy, which certainly doesn’t hurt their appeal!
Lambs as a Baby Shower Theme
If you’re looking for a sweet and innocent baby shower theme, lamb cupcakes are a perfect choice! Not only are they adorable, but they also have a lot of cultural significance.
I can see the room now – with a lamb baby shower banner, Little lamb plates and napkins, even adorable lamb thank you stickers for the party favors!
OK – I am getting carried away, LOL – I could probably have a baby shower idea website!
How to Make Lamb Cupcakes

Lamb Cupcakes from scratch
The chocolate cupcake base can be made from either a boxed mix or the following recipe:

A good yellow cupcake recipe for the base:
- 1 cup all-purpose flour
- 1 1/4 tsp baking powder
- 1/8 tsp salt
- 2 large eggs at room temp
- 3/4 cup white sugar
- 1/4 cup unsalted butter, cut into 1/2” cubes
- 1/2 cup milk – the higher the fat content the better
- 2 tsp vanilla extract
- 1 1/2 tsp vegetable oil
How to make Lamb Cupcakes
Preheat the oven to 350°F and place the shelf in the middle of the oven. Line the muffin tin with cupcake liners.
In a large bowl whisk flour, baking powder, and salt together. Set aside.Place butter and milk in a microwave-safe dish and zap 2 minutes on high to melt the butter.
In a separate small bowl, with your hand mixer beat eggs for 30 seconds on medium-high speed.
With the beater still going, pour the sugar in over 30 seconds.
Beat eggs for 6 minutes more on a highly faster speed, or until tripled in volume and almost pure white.
When the egg is whipped, scatter 1/3 flour across the surface, then beat on low for 5 seconds. Stop beating, add half the remaining flour, then mix again on low for 5 seconds. Add remaining flour, then mix on Speed 1 for 5 – 10 sec until the flour is just mixed in. Once you can’t see flour, stop straight away.
Pour the hot milk/butter, vanilla, and oil into the now empty flour bowl. Add about 3/4 cups of the Egg Batter into the hot milk. Use a whisk to mix until smooth. It should look kind of foamy.
With the beater on low still, pour the milk mixture into the Egg Batter over 10-15 seconds, then turn the beater off.
Fill your muffin pan with batter until they are 2/3 full. Bake 20-22 minutes until a toothpick comes out clean.
Remove them from the pan and place them on a wire rack to cool before decorating.

How do you store Lamb Cupcakes?
Here is the thing – with the more futzy designs, I like to make them in advance of an event or get-together. The best way to usually store your finished creations? Room Temperature.
Granted, they aren’t going to be around that long – my family of three could easily take them out in two to three days. Since you are using canned frosting instead of buttercream frosting or fondant, they should be fine for five to six days. You can learn more about that in our article How To Frost A Cupcake.

Lamb Cupcakes Tutorial
Bake your cupcakes and let them cool completely
Roll out your black fondant and cut teardrop shapes for the lamb heads = you need a larger one for the head
and almond-shaped pieces for the ears. Set them aside
Use a straight edge to make nostrils on the black fondant head, near the wide bottom part as shown
Place the piping bag into a large glass and fold the sides of the bag over the rim of the glass. Scoop the vanilla frosting into the piping bag. Bring the pastry bag edges up and twist them together to start decorating.
If you don’t have a piping bag, try a plastic bag with the tip snipped off. Frost the cooled and filled cupcakes.
Start applying marshmallows at the cupcake wrapper line in circles, working up to the top for 2 rows.
Apply 2 rows of marshmallows the apply the black fondant head
Finish filling in the cupcake with marshmallows
Add the black fondant ears, using a little water to glue the ears onto the face.
Attach eyes to head using a tiny bit of frosting to act as the glue
