How to Make Black Forest Cupcakes: A Delicious and Decadent Recipe

What is Black Forest Cake?

Black Forest Cake is a classic German chocolate cake that consists of layers of chocolate cake, whipped cream, and cherries. It’s based on a German dessert called Schwarzwälder Kirschtorte, which means “Black Forest Cherry-torte.”

The cake is probably named after a liquor made off of the sour cherries that are grown in the Black Forest region. The Black Forest is a large mountain range in southwest Germany. The mountain range owes its name to the plentiful large, dark trees that grow in the region.

Who created Black Forest Cake?

According to Wikepedia:

The confectioner Josef Keller [de] (1887–1981) claimed to have invented Schwarzwälder Kirschtorte in its present form in 1915 at the prominent Café Agner in Bad Godesberg, now a suburb of Bonn about 500 km (310 mi) north of the Black Forest. This claim, however, has never been substantiated.

So, it is one of those things that we have a rough idea of, but may never know for sure. That is OK – all we need to know is that it is an amazingly delicious and decadent treat!

What makes chocolate and cherries just a great combination?

The tartness of the cherries pairs perfectly with the sweetness of the chocolate. Plus, both black cherries and dark chocolate are rich in antioxidants, which makes this a healthy dessert option!

Can I make these in advance?

Yes, almost. If you bake the chocolate cupcakes and let them cool, you can store them for up to a week in the fridge or a few months in the freezer. If you put them in an airtight container or Ziploc baggie and remove the excess air, you are good to go.

Just make sure they are thawed out at room temperature for at least 24 hours before scooping out the insides and filling them in with the cherries and frosting.

If you fill and frost them in advance? The centers will get too soggy and you will lose that “wow” factor that you are after.

The chocolate cupcake base can be made from either a boxed mix or the following recipe:

How do you store Black Forest Cupcakes?

Here is the thing – with the more futzy designs, I like to make them in advance of an event or get-together. The best way to usually store your finished creations? Room Temperature.

Granted, they aren’t going to be around that long – my family of three could easily take them out in two to three days. Since you are using canned frosting instead of buttercream frosting or fondant, they should be fine for five to six days. You can learn more about that in our article How To Frost A Cupcake.
