When were M&Ms first invented?
They were first created in 1941 by Forrest Mars and Bruce Murrie, who founded the M&M/Mars company together. Forest came up with the idea of the candy after observing soldiers eating chocolate pellets with hard shells during the Spanish Civil War. The candy was produced for the soldiers and had a hard shell so that they could carry it during warm weather without worrying about it melting.
Mars and Murrie took the idea and ran with it. The company’s first big customer was the U.S. Army, which loved that way to allow soldiers to carry chocolate in tropical climates without it melting. During World War II, the candies were exclusively sold to the military!
Talk about a built-in market! That adds up to over 16 million soldiers! Those soldiers continued their love of that hard-shelled goodness and got their families to enjoy it after the war was over. The rest, as they say, is history.
Who Created M&Ms?
M&Ms were actually created by Forrest Mars and his business partner, Bruce Murrie. They founded the M&M/Mars company together.
Where are M&Ms made?
M&Ms are made in Hackettstown, New Jersey. This is where the M&M/Mars factory is located. It remains one of the largest candy factories on Earth and has been producing M&Ms since 1941.
Also, M&M has a manufacturing company in Tennessee where it produces more than 500 million M&Ms per day.
What does the M&M stand for in M&M candy?
M&Ms does not stand for any word in particular. It is simply Mars and Murrie who created M&Ms that are named this way.
Can you bake M&Ms inside cupcakes?
Yes! You can bake M&Ms right into your cupcakes. Just press them down into the top of the batter before baking. They will soften and melt a bit as they bake, so you’ll get that nice chocolate-covered M&M in every bite. Frost and decorate as usual.

How do you store M and M Cupcakes?
Here is the thing – with the more futzy designs, I like to make them in advance of an event or get-together. The best way to usually store your finished creations? Room Temperature.
Granted, they aren’t going to be around that long – my family of three could easily take them out in two to three days. Since you are using canned frosting instead of buttercream frosting or fondant, they should be fine for five to six days. You can learn more about that in our article How To Frost A Cupcake.

M&M Cupcakes Tutorial
You need your chocolate cupcakes to be baked and totally cooled off.
Place the piping bag into a large glass and fold the sides of the bag over the rim of the glass. Scoop the vanilla frosting into the piping bag. Bring the pastry bag edges up and twist them together to start decorating. Add your 1 mm star tip.
If you don’t have a piping bag, try a plastic bag with the tip snipped off and star tip added. Frost the cooled cupcakes.
Generously sprinkle on mini M&M’s
