What are Minions?
Minions are small, yellow creatures who have appeared in the Despicable Me movies. They are loyal and helpful to Gru, the main character, and often get into mischief. The Minions have become very popular since the first movie was released in 2010, and there are now all sorts of Minion-themed merchandise as well as beloved by most kids.
What Kind of Minion Cake?
If you have ever wondered what kind of Minion cake to make for a party – go with cupcakes. Everyone gets their own Minion, portions are all the same size, and it is easier to serve them!
Minion Cupcakes with Twinkies
I have seen these, and although they are cute? They take more ingredients than I use for these Minion cupcakes and are more difficult to transport than mine. I ALWAYS see people putting the minions back upright on the cupcakes when the Twinkies have shifted during transport.
They end up looking less attractive and seeing you touch the food before you serve it tends to turn people off.
Our cupcakes are flat, use fewer ingredients, and are very easy to transport. They also hold up better over a while as Twinkies tend to dry out.

Minion cupcake tutorial
Preheat the oven to 350°F and place the shelf in the middle of the oven. Line the muffin tin with cupcake liners.
Take your cake mix and add the ingredients it asks for. Fill your muffin tips cups 2/3 full of batter and bake per the box instructions.
Let them cool completely.
Frosting Your Minion Cupcakes
Place the piping bag into a large glass and fold the sides of the bag over the rim of the glass. Scoop the vanilla frosting into the piping bag. Bring the pastry bag edges up and twist them together to start decorating.
Add a large plain tip to your decorating bag
If you don’t have a piping bag, try a plastic bag with the tip snipped off.
Use the yellow buttercream to pipe a smooth flat swirl onto each cupcake.
Add 1 or 2 sugar eyes to the cupcake – this depends on if you are making Dave or Stuart.
Use the gray buttercream to outline the eye or eyes for the goggles, then use the black buttercream to make the goggle straps.
Your minions are ready for mischief!
Minion Cupcake FAQs:
Can I make these ahead of time?
Yes, you can make the cupcakes 1-2 days in advance. Store them in an airtight container at room temperature. The frosting can also be made ahead of time and stored in the fridge for up to a week. Let it come to room temperature and re-whip it before piping it onto the cupcakes.
What if I can’t find the large sugar eyes?
You can use regular-size sugar eyes.
Can I use a different color frosting?
Yes! If you have seen the movies, you know some Minions may come in purple…
How do you store Minion Cupcakes?
Here is the thing – with the more futzy designs, I like to make them in advance of an event or get-together. The best way to usually store your finished creations? Room Temperature.
Granted, they aren’t going to be around that long – my family of three could easily take them out in two to three days. Since you are using canned frosting instead of buttercream frosting or fondant, they should be fine for five to six days.
